The Water Clock in the Tower of the Winds
James Stuart (1713–1788), Nicholas Revett (1720–1804) The Antiquities of Athens Measured and Delineated
Borrowing the model established by Desgodetz, who carefully re-measured the ancient edifices of Rome, architects James Stuart and Nicholas Revett, who had also studied drawing and painting, set off for Greece in 1751 with the backing of the Society of Dilettanti. The goal was to provide a new and very accurate description of the vestiges of Athens. Eight years after their return they began to publish The Antiquities of Athens, whose abundance of accurate data marked a new stage in the study of ancient architecture and, more broadly, in the modern history of archaeology.
